The EPA estimates that showering accounts for 17 percent of indoor residential water use in the United States. One of the best ways to save water is to install a water-saving, low flow shower head. These showerheads are made with technology that manipulates a lower water flow so that you sacrifice none of the luxury you’re used to in your showering routine. Technology can vary from creatively designed orifices that focus the stream and control the size of water droplets, to showerheads that inject air into the water stream to increase the blast.
Low flow shower heads typically use 1.5 to 2.5 gallons per minute (gpm). By contrast, older or non-efficient fixtures use more than 2.5 gpm, with those older than 15 years sometimes using more than 7 gallons per minute!
Not sure if you need one of these water saving shower heads? Do this test: put a bucket that’s marked in gallons under your shower head, then turn on the shower at the normal rate you would use. Use a watch to figure out how many seconds it takes to fill the bucket to the one-gallon mark. If it takes less than 20 seconds then you’re using more water than you really need and should consider buying a low flow shower head instead.
You also save money in addition to saving water and the environment. Whereas a low flow fixture could run you as little as $15 (a bit more for higher quality ones), the 20% or more in water savings you’d realize would translate to $50-$75 a year on water bills and another $20-$50 a year on energy bills for heating the water. In other words, the showerhead pays for itself almost immediately.
Installing a new shower head is easy. You usually just unscrew the old one, screw in the new one, and you’re done!
If going green matters to you, there is every reason to change to a water saving shower head. There’s not much else you can do that is so easy and makes such a big difference for both the environment and your wallet without sacrificing one bit of luxury.

Our Stone Age Future

Many commentators find it hard to escape the conclusion that the human race is doomed to return to the stone age fairly soon. This is predicted fairly soon – in geological terms, at any rate – maybe in around 500 or 1,000 years time.
How come? Look at the rate we have discovered new fuel and metal sources and progressively burnt them out. Within two hundred years or so we have nearly mined the planet out. The rate we are burning up the planet’s resources is simply unbelievable.
It won’t be long before all liquid and gas fossil fuels are burnt out. Following that, all the coal deposits will be used up. Even the uranium will eventually be depleted and finished – and that means the lights will finally go out. By that time metals will be scarce, and a chunk of iron or aluminium will be worth more than gold is now.
Probably, by this time, the only power sources will be solar, wind or tidal generators, and maybe a small amount of geothermal power in one or two areas. Also, with no metal for repair and maintenance – and certainly not to build new with – these existing power sources will have a short life expectancy. In any case this shouldn’t be too much of a problem since by that time there may not be much left to power. The seas will probably be a fished-out toxic waste dump by then, so there’s not much hope there either.
The prospects for human life after this point look extremely grim. Essentially we will have burnt the planet out and thrown ourselves back to the Stone Age – except that we won’t even be able to survive at that level of ‘civilisation’. At least they had unlimited amounts of forest timber, flints, and game to hunt then. Those have mostly gone now.
The horror of a return to this Neanderthal lifestyle can only be imagined – a spade or knife will be worth 10 pigs and 20 cows; roots and weeds grubbed up with an old stick will be the average diet. There will be no money, only barter with pigs, cows and slaves. And as we descend back to the depths of a Neanderthal life again, out of which we can never escape, all the old and vile ways of life will return, to fit the new caveman lifestyle. Men will once again become animals.
The shortage of food will result in cannibalism, until the population has shrunk back down to the size that can be supported without any technology. Cannibalism will probably be widespread, since without any technology to produce and distribute food, the population will have to shrink down to a fraction of the current numbers, and until that happens hunger will be universal. As the shortages begin to bite, starvation and disease will reduce the earth’s population to around 5 percent of the present number. Since by the time this all comes about, the world population will be even larger than the huge numbers now, it means that something like 99% of the population will die out.
Naturally, regions with the most advanced use of technology now will suffer the most at this time. The likelihood is that impoverished areas in isolated countries will more or less stay as they are – for ever. High-tech countries will see a return to pre-Stone Age life but without any of the benefits of the land at that time – we have removed all the usable materials. The implication is that life in the western world will return to the same sort of level seen in somewhere like Papua New Guinea now – but without the culture. This isn’t really controversial since no one can suggest any realistic alternative.
And remember – there can never be any escape.
No transport, no metals, no power, no industry, no energy, no plastics – and that means no medical care of any kind. No antibiotics, no surgeons, no survival if you fall ill.
A lifestyle of a pre-Stone Age type seems to await us, as even flints and game to hunt are no longer available. However, as life dies out in the Western industrialised world, it will regenerate in areas like Brazil, if any forest remains. When the toxic urban humanity that chainsaws the trees and bulldozes the land has died out, native tribes – if any remain – should have a brighter future.
There’s only one possible escape from this dilemma: if before that point we have developed a space travel method that allows us to mine the planets and asteroids, to keep the supply of metals going for vital industries.
And the only vital industry by that time will be space travel research, because the planet will on a short trip to extinction in the near future. Only a means to get off the planet and find another, where we can carry on as before, will be important.
If we’re lucky. And that escape will be for the chosen few only – politicians, administrators and the occasional engineer perhaps.
