Wind generator technology has been steadily improving for a quite some time. In the past ten years or so, it has seen great improvements and has been used more and more for home generation of energy. Since they generate more power than ever while being smaller and quieter, modern wind turbines can be a great source of alternative energy for many people. Homeowners can now find guides and plans that teach how to build a wind turbine.
The most significant issue with early types of wind generators was that they were big and needed a very strong and consistent wind to get them spinning. Even though they generated considerable quantities of electricity when they were spinning, they were not good fits for many homeowners due to their size and height requirements. These wind turbines needed to be mounted quite high up in order to get consistent wind because they were being used in residential areas. Being up above trees and other buildings allowed them to catch the maximum amount of wind and thus produce the most power possible. In order to accomplish this, the wind generator had to be mounted at the top of a heavy duty, and often ugly, tower which was expensive and could cause complaints from neighbors. To make matters worse, there are restrictions on tower height or wind turbine installation in many towns. These older, larger units were better suited for locations that had larger lots with areas that were open and not impacted by tall trees and building.
Recent developments in wind turbine design have helped these homeowners by reducing the size of the turbine. More recent designs are smaller than the older models and require less of a wind to spin. They are also generally much lighter because they are made of more innovative materials. This means that they don’t need to be mounted as high as the older wind generators and can still generate a good amount of electricity from a smaller wind. Another improvement in these more modern wind turbines is their blade design which allows them to be more efficient with the wind they receive and quieter as well. These more recent wind generators are also much quieter and more efficient thanks to their blade design. This can allow many homeowners who live in smaller neighborhoods to install these more modern wind turbines and generate green electricity without causing much disturbance to their neighbors.
The newer wind turbines can turn more quickly and generator power sooner than the bigger ones because they are much lighter. A wind generator must be pointed into the wind for it to generator energy. Generally, this is done with a rudder on the tail. With the larger wind turbines it took a strong wind to orient them before they could start spinning to generate power. In many cases they could miss a smaller wind completely and never generate electricity. The newer, less heavy wind generators can start spinning and thus producing electricity more quickly because of the lower requirement for wind to orient them. The result is that the older and heavier wind turbines might have been able to produce more power when they were spinning, but they were spinning less often. Because of this, these newer smaller wind generators can produce almost as much energy over the course of a year as these larger versions since they are spinning more consistently. Installation costs can be considerably less with these more receint wind generators because they can be mounted directly to roofs. A homemade wind turbine is a perfect alternative for any homeowner looking to generate some free energy from a passing breeze.
